Wow! I never would have guessed this is a sound they make. Never say one in the wild either. Thanks for sharing.

Reminds me of the time I almost got hit by a Western Diamondback - I heard the rattling but living in a place with so many crickets and cicadae in the summer I never even thought it might not be a cricket... He just barely missed me.

Went out for a walk in the woods today and heard a similar type of  sound.  No, we do not have mountain lions here :-)  But it was a 'similar' type sound, loud, not exactly of course but it was a bird calling.  I immediately thought about the call recorded in the link above.

you 'think' you don't have mountain lions there ...  be surprised where they show up when you east expect one.

Saw a nature program last night and the Cheetah made the same sound....read somewhere that the cheetah and cougar share a similar ancestry.

Thanks Joe.  I remember that story.  But they are SO rare.  So rare.  I don't think anyone has ever "confirmed" any recent sightings.  I'm sure what I heard was a bird :-)

Lucky that we aren't on the menu...on any night we (Bend Oregon) probably have 3 cats roaming our neighborhoods, feeding on town deer or pets. No one ever sees them unless they park themselves in a wide open space (killed but not transplanted per wildlife policy) If we were on the menu (you would still not see them) they may visit in your home. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/mor ... f53ffd6139

Connecticut Mountain Lion.

Hope this link works. Subsequent dna analysis proved that the animal was from South Dakota. The article discusses the distinction of "eastern mountain lions" as a separate sub-species. Hence various agencies continue to deny the existence of the eastern mountain lion while compiling thousands of reported sittings. Flesh and bone can't be denied. Warning Graphic Photo of the dead cat.

Here is a link to the CT mountain lion story. The animal was traced to a South Dakota population thru DNA and trail cam photos.
