Palm Desert CA Area Locations

I am going to be in the Palm Desert CA location during the week of September 19. Plan on a 2 or 3 trips to Joshua Tree NP while there. Would appreciate any suggestions about Joshua Tree NP or surrounding locales (up to a 2-3 hour drive from Palm Desert is fine). I am sure I will check out all the well-known locations of the park but prefer the little known and out of the way locations most of the time. Whether driving or hiking to them.

Appreciate any suggestions.

The entire Joshua Tree area is great. I particularly like Jumbo Rocks, the Hall of Horrors and the Cholla Cactus Garden (particularly at sunrise).

Brad, as a fellow Topekan, you should make an effort to meet the Superintendent at JP. His name is David Smith. His former job was Super at Brown V. Board here in our city. He was a member of my Rotary Club. Nice guy.
