I may take a trip over to Colorado to get some fall colors. Any thoughts on good times to go? I am guessing pretty soon for Aspens? Thanks all!

You will need to leave immediately if you hope to catch fall colors in Colorado or most places in the Rockies. The peak is typically between mid-September to the first week in October.

Aspen are eaither at peak or already past peak north of the New Mexico border for the most part with the exception of the SW corner of CO which are at peak now. It's not too late in NM and northern AZ though but you need to go by this weekend. Aspen are high altitude trees and as such change earlier than lower altitude trees that you may be used to as the temps are much colder at elevation. Aspen do best between 6000 and 10000 feet above sea level. You won't find many outside of that range.

Dan, I was at Aspen last week. Maroon Bells and Castle creek/ Ashcroft area were close to peak. There were some green Aspens but at the same time, lots of yellow leaves on the ground as well. You'd be better off going to southern Colorado.

The following thread on that forum has regular updates with photos. You will find it helpful.

Dan, I am in Ouray right now and the Aspens around here (Dolores, Silverton, Ridgeway, Ouray, etc.) are peak to just slightly past peak. They are spectacular, but won't last long. You need to get here ASAP. BYW, the weather here is much warmer than usual and I am running out of shorts and tee shirts. Help. :D

Yes, what Chas said. In fact, if you're not already here, I would put this off until next year.
