Frequently Asked Questions:

What can I expect when I register?

You will immediately receive an automated email confirmation of your registration, which also serves as a receipt for your deposit.

Within 48 hours we will contact you personally to confirm your reservation. You will then receive a detailed confirmation package, which is customized for each workshop. This package includes detailed lodging and transportation information, equipment suggestions, clothing guidelines, luggage requirements, important contact numbers and anything else that pertains to the specific workshop you registered for. It also contains contact information in case you have additional questions.

Attendees will also be asked to summarize what skills they have and what areas they feel they need help with the most in terms of advancing their skills. This gives us a chance to get some background and also allows us to design the workshop programs with the individual needs of the attendees in mind.

What is included in the price?

Each workshop is different. Some are all inclusive which includes lodging, meals and/or transportation; others may not include certain things. For details on what is included in each workshop please refer to each workshop page in the current schedule.

What about instruction and activities?

While each workshop location is different in terms of what the activities are, whether we are flying in helicopters in Hawaii, or exploring St. Paul Island by vehicle, all workshops will include a mix of in-the-field instruction as well as some formal classroom, teaching and critique sessions and in-depth discussions on the ins and outs of nature photography.

How large are your group sizes?

All of our groups are kept small so a high level of personalized instruction is available for all skill levels. In general there are no more than 8 attendees per instructor. This allows us to focus on your individual needs, minimize our impact on the areas we visit and maximize the photographic opportunities. The end result is a better value for your money and time and a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

What is your cancellation/refund/payment policy?

Cancellations can be made up to 90 days prior to the workshop date, however you forfeit your deposit unless we cancel the workshop, in which case you will receive a full refund. Cancellations made after 90 days prior to the workshop date are not eligible for refunds. We have the right to cancel any workshop for lack of registrants up to 90 days prior to the workshop date. While many workshops will run with just a single registrant, other may require a minimum registration. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Paypal are accepted for deposit payments. Should you wish to pay the final payment amount by credit card or PayPal a 3% convenience fee will be added to the remaining balance. We do accept wire transfers and checks.

Do you offer equipment rentals?

Depending on availability, participants may rent photography equipment from us for their use during a workshop on a first-come-first-served basis. Selection is limited. Please inquire for availability and pricing. We can also refer participants to reputable photo equipment rental companies.

Deposits are required to reserve your spot in a workshop. Amounts are specified on each workshop page. Unless otherwise specified deposits are non-refundable, unless we cancel the workshop.

What about travel insurance?

There are many companies that offer travel insurance and we highly recommend considering purchasing travel insurance—especially for more expensive international trips.

What is your smoking policy?

We do not permit smoking within vicinity of the instructor or other non-smoking participants—in the field or during indoor class sessions. At lodges, after hours, smoking may be permitted in certain designated areas. Check with us if you smoke. We also do not have any instructors who smoke.

Still have questions?

Please don't hesitate to contact us for additional information. You can also call us at 1-888-667-0559 Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

It was great to have Greg as a mentor. He is very forthcoming and does not mind sharing inside info on how to, camera settings, use of equipment and in general to get the most out of what is important at that moment. I will for sure take many more workshops with him.
Carlotta G.
Loons and More - Kamloops BC
I really appreciated Greg's supportive approach and his willingness to respond to our questions. His knowledge and experience did not come across in an arrogant way, but rather gave us access to the kind of gains that we could hope to make in improving our approach.

West Coast Bird Rookeries by Boat - Sarasota, Florida
I love the beauty of nature and people. This workshop combined both of these loves. Costa Rica is a beautiful country; pair that with a group of supportive, friendly people and you come up with a winner of a trip.

Rainforest Macro Photography - Costa Rica
As a biologist, this trip was a thrilling and long awaited exposure to the tropics. I took my share of photos, too, but also enjoyed taking in the culture and scenery of Costa Rica. It was a very mellow, compatible group of people. The lodges chosen were perfect for our purposes and I'd like to visit them again. Thanks for organizing such a wonderful trip!
Stephen and George-Ann M.
Hummingbirds and More - Costa Rica
Greg was the best workshop leader I have had the pleasure to have worked with. Unlike other experiences, his focus was on the participants and helping them improve their photography.

Along with their expertise in photography, Greg Downing and Greg Basco have very good senses of humor, which can be particularly important when dealing with a variety of personalities among the workshop attendees. They worked very hard to answer all questions and to anticipate logistical problems and deal with them promptly. Jóse, too, contributed mightily to the quality of the overall experience, with his quiet competence and knowledge of the birds and other ecological elements.
