NatureScapes Workshop - Ultimate Falklands
Ultimate Falklands
Falkland Islands

Spend two weeks with Greg Downing in one of the world’s BEST locations for wildlife photography. The Falkland Islands host a variety of species of penguins, as well as albatross and other birds, seals and sea lions! We have painstakingly designed this itinerary to coincide with peak bird breeding activity and to put you in the best locations to capture dramatic images.

Includes 3 nights at “the neck” – often described as one of the most fantastic wildlife spectacles on the planet—where we wake up each morning and go to sleep each evening with wildlife at our doorstep at this amazing location!

Day 1, November 30

Participants should plan to arrive at Mount Pleasant International Airport via LAN. There we will have a personal meet and greet with our representative and transfer overland to Stanley and our accommodations for the next two nights.

Malvina House Hotel (B,L,D).

Day 2, December 1

We’ll have full-day excursions to Volunteer Point. Travelling overland we’ll pass Johnsons Harbour and arrive at Volunteer Beach where we’ll visit the largest colony of breeding King Penguins, as well as Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins.

Malvina House Hotel (B,L,D)

Day 3–6, December 2–5

Today our adventure will begin with a transfer to Stanley airport for our flight to Sea Lion Island. We’ll spend the next four days exploring this amazing location where wildlife is within reasonable walking distance of the lodge. We’ll search for Elephant Seals, Gentoo Penguins, Rockhopper Penguins, King Cormorants and much more.

Sea Lion Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 7–9, December 6–8

Today we’ll fly to Saunders Island where we will spend the next three days in cabins in the Neck wildlife area. Saunders Island is home to King, Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins, plus the world's largest colony of black-browed albatross. Please note that accommodations are here are shared with a shared shower/facility—24hr power, kitchen and small lounge area combined. Meal packs will be sent from Malvina House Hotel which will be homemade frozen meals and will need minimal preparation. Ingredients for breakfast and packed lunches will also be sent.

Day 10–12, December 9–11

Today we’ll fly to Bleaker Island for three nights. This is a smaller, flatter island which offers easy walking to wildlife locations such as pond areas and beautiful beaches. We’ll search for Imperial Cormorants, and the Rockhopper Penguin colony which is just a few minutes from our lodge.

Day 13-14, December 12-13

We’ll head back to Stanley today (via internal flight) and transfer to Malvina House. We’ll have a bit of downtime where you may explore and take in the sights such as the Whalebone Arch, Christchurch Cathedral as well as various monuments along the sea wall. We’ll meet in the late afternoon for our “Chum Trip” where we’ll spend 3 hours aboard the B. Mar searching for pelagic birds. Your waterproof gear is a must for this one!

On our last full day we'll have a day trip to Cape Bougainville for more Rockhopper Penguins, Sea Lions and Giant Petrels. Alternately we'll head back to Volunteer point depending on our preference.
