NatureScapes Workshop - Navajo Country & North Rim Grand Canyon
Navajo Country & North Rim Grand Canyon
NE Arizona

Visit and photograph Arizona's world famous Navajo Country with NatureScapes.net and 18 year Arizona resident, E.J. Peiker. During this workshop we will explore the incredible red rock formations of the mystical Monument Valley deep within the Navajo Nation. Not only will we photograph some of the well known and iconic spots such as The Mittens, Merrick Butte, and Sentinel Mesa, our experienced Navajo guide, who is also a photographer and has worked with the film industry, will lead us to shooting locations that one is not permitted to go to on their own. This opens up many possibilities for unique images of this spectacular area. After leaving Monument Valley, we will travel to Page, Arizona where we will photograph the Lower Antelope Canyon. Less famous than its big brother, Upper Antelope Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon does not have the severe restrictions on photographers and the massive number of people of the Upper canyon making photography difficult. While in the canyon we will photograph the spectacular sandstone formations and the sun playing shadow games on the walls of the canyon. We will also visit and photograph the spectacular Horseshoe Bend overlook. We will conclude the workshop at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Much cooler and less crowded than the overcrowded South Rim, the North Rim offers unparalleled views of the canyon and there is the possibility of photographing wildlife as well.

Itinerary:

Day 1, August 25:

Arrive at Monument Valley by 2:00 PM. We will take a self guided drive through the valley stopping to photograph the beautiful and massive red rock formations. At sunset, we will be able to photograph the entire valley right from the grounds of our hotel. With any luck, during this time of year, there may even be thunderstorms in the distance. The View Hotel.

Day 2, August 26:

We will meet with our Navajo guide early in the morning for a day of spectacular shooting in secluded areas within the valley that are only accessible with a guide. We will spend both our morning and afternoon shoots with the guide.

Day 3, August 27:

We start our day with a sunrise shoot of Monument Valley and then drive about two hours to Page, Arizona. Once in Page we will make our way to Lower Antelope Canyon followed by Horseshoe Bend at sunset.

Day 4, August 28:

Another early morning shoot finds us at some breathtaking Lake Powell overlook spots. We will then move on to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for an evening shoot overlooking one of the 7 wonders of the world.

Day 5, August 29:

The entire day will be spent shooting at various locations along the North Rim.

Day 6, August 30:

Another morning shoot of the North Rim is on tap for this morning before concluding the workshop and heading our separate ways for home around 10:00 AM.

Note: This workshop is for physically fit photographers. Lower Antelope Canyon requires the photographer to climb down about 20 feet into a narrow slot canyon. Horseshoe Bend requires hiking about a half mile over rocky terrain. Temperatures can range from the 40's in the morning at Grand Canyon to 110 degrees in the afternoon in Page and Monument Valley.
