The sizing is very confusing. First of all, how can 3-section and 4-section tripods both have a total of 3 shim sizes? It seems like the 4-section should have 1 more shim size than the 3-section. Also, top/middle/bottom is confusing. For example, is "top" the inside of the largest section or the outside of the second largest section? I have a 3-series 4-section and thought the latter and was wrong - the shim was too big. I had to order the the next size down. Still waiting to see if it fits.

The Apex Mini beanbag incorporates the most versatile and functional design to date and addresses the mobile support needs of the photographer like no other on the market. After the original Apex penetrated the market, the creators at Essential Photo Gear listened to what customers were saying. One of the main suggestions was to create a bean bag with all the same great features as the original but in a smaller package. It is now reality! The Apex Mini is perfect for lenses smaller than 500mm, but still offers the same strength and durability of the larger version. They also created a smaller custom aircraft-grade aluminum plate to fit the Apex Mini. Each aluminum plate is hand-made with the assistance of a 100,000 pound press right here in the United States.

The unique design provides a stable platform for attaching your ballhead or gimbal head, allowing you to track, pan, auto-focus, without the problems typically associated with bean bag use.*Each Apex Mini is provided with an aluminum plate that can be inserted into the top pocket of the bag for a tripod head. The aluminum plate can be removed when desired to use as a regular soft shell bean bag.* Moreover, this versatile design negates the need to purchase a bulky and heavy to transport aluminum window mount.

  • The large flat top provides a highly stable surface for lens support on its own, while also allowing the bag to be easily inverted for use on a car hood or the ground.
  • The U shaped portion is covered in a high-tack material to insure the bag stays where it is positioned. The U shape also provides outstanding stabilization of equipment when the bag is inverted for hood or ground use.
  • The versatile strap design allows the bean bag to be securely fastened to a vehicle door handle, rail, beam, etc as well as offering an easy means of carry.

I have used this beanbag several times already. It works well hanging over my car door as I photograph snow geese, ducks, and the like. It seems well designed and built. I use it with a gimbal and the two go well together.

Advantages: Compact enough, and handy for gimbal use.

Disadvantages: None so far
