I stopped by my local dealer for the heck of it today. He has two being delivered tomorrow and has been told not to expect more for a while.

Neil Fitzgerald wrote:Apparently the NZ distributors initial order was for 40 bodies. Now that doesn't sound like a whole lot to me. They got 4. It may be a small country, but what is the point in sending four?!
A bit off topic I'm sorry, but it bugs me how they over promise (it was supposed to be available early Dec). Lack of manufacturing capacity is one thing; they could have just said initially that it would be available in Jan/Feb then fill orders more quickly. It is either a ploy to try to hype things or they needed to do more last minute fixes than they anticipated, or both. Errrrr!
Hi Neil,

I understand how you feel. My dealer got 2 in Melbourne office and 2 in sydney office and another Melbourne store go a few as well. That said this is a much improved position, at least we are one of the first few countries in the world to receive stock. I can remember when I first ordered the 1dmkII and 1dsmkIII, it was at least 3 months before Australia received any bodies.

Cheers
Perry

I think the upcoming Olympics may be creating a stronger than usual initial supply shortage. they definitely want to get this camer into the hands of every Canon shooter covering the games. That's several thousand if not tens of thousands of cameras going there rather than into the retail channel.

Just bought a new 1D Mk IV yesterday here in Spain. I was thinking to wait some months to buy it, but in two days I am going to travel for 7 weeks long to Tierra de Fuego, Falklands islands and Easter Island and I cannot resisted to buy the camera for that important wildlife photography trip.

I only have took some shots at home comparing to my current 1Ds MkII (I will took both in the trip). The files are similar in resolution as both cameras have 16 MP, with somewhat different color tonalities but with lots of more dynamic range in the new 1D IV. An skyline I shoot today from my window show overexposed white skies in the 1Ds II (it's raining in Barcelona), but show much more clouds texture in 1D IV.

I skipped the Mark III series so, coming from Mk II cameras, the buttons and layout are completely new for me. Someone knows some places where to find the best Custom Functions settings for AF in the Mk III series (they are almost the same than the Mark IV I think) for wildlife photography?

Hi Oriol,

got mine last week and had the same question regarding the AF configuration. The operating manual is not a big help, but the White Paper on Canon's US website is quite useful in explaining the relationship between the different settings.

My MK4 was delivered to my office yesterday. I had a meeting last night so could only spend a couple of hours setting up the various functions the way I wanted. The rest of the week is meetings and more meetings. However, I hope to get some images this weekend. First impression of the camera as a piece of equipment - not from an IQ point- is that it is first rate. Rock solid build, easy to use interface and fits my large hands well. It seems lighter than my old MK2 with a brighter viewfinder. Pictures will follow as I get them.

I've got mine 3 weeks ago. Though I've not yet done extensive and scientific tests, tracking AF works flawlessly which is THE key point for me. High ISO is very good up to the 3200- 6400 range. As expected and based on the examples I've seen, the MK IV cannot rival the Nikon D3s in this regard, though I could not compare both cams side-by-side until now. I would rate the high ISO capability about the same or a bit better compared to my MK III (which I sold some time ago) and definetly better compared to the 7D. No wonders here, but nevertheless impressive face to the increase in resolution over the MKIII. Detail and color rendition are excellent. As said, AF has been the most important reason for me to upgrade. I rarely shot at very high ISOs. So far, I'm very content.
