After-Market LP-E6 Battery

Postby James Stephens on Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:15 am

Can anyone recommend a 3rd party/after market battery replacement for the LP-E6 battery as used by the Canon EOS 5D Mk II and the EOS 7D?

I have always purchased my after-market BP-511A batteries from Sterlingtek but they don't have an LP-E6 (yet).

James,

I would be very careful with replacement LP-E6 batteries. Prior to my Galapagos trip this summer I looked around for a non-Canon spare--Almost everything I found came with its own charger and a disclaimer that the battery strenght might not register on the camera. I know at one point Delkin had indications of one available soon on their website but I think it went away.

FWIW the 5DMKII seems to go forever (even when attached to my 600F4IS). I do have the 7D to make any comparisons.

Thanks Rocky.

Yes the LP-E6's last longer. The Canon LP-E6's are 1800mAh vs 1480mAh on the Canon BP-511A's.

The SterlingTek BP-511A replacements are 2000mAh, work in the Canon charger and I have always had great success with them. But yes one should be careful of after market batteries in general.

I have a question in to SterlingTek asking when their LP-E6 replacement is coming out but they haven't answered; I have also asked whether the batteries will register in camera when they do come out (they are working on an LP-E6 as I understand it).

I have a couple of 3rd party LP-E6's that don't have the chip, so they don't report, and you cannot use the standard charger.

Both the standard battery and the 3rd party ones last a very long time. No issues yet. I just start the with OEM LP-E6, and switch over to the 3rd party if I run out. I've yet to run down the battery completely yet... probably have to wait for a super cold day.

I bought a spare for the Galapagos trip just in case I dropped mine over the edge of the boat.

I would be curious to know if you can charge the OEM battery with the third party charger--Have you tried to do so Kin Lau?
