This weekend (9/10 and 9/11/2011), my wife and I found this specimen feeding at our feeders in the backyard. I believe it is a leucistic Anna's Hummingbird. I admit I am poor with bird identification, and thought someone here might offer a different opinion. The shot is a little darker than what I am seeing on my computer that I processed it on, so I will work on fixing that tonight. Some information on my location. Far east valley in Mesa, Arizona, approximately 1 mile south of the border of Usery Park. The elevation is approximately 1700ft. We have a number of hummingbirds, but to my belief, they are all Anna's. Your inputs are appreciated.

No idea of the species but a very nice record shot. I'm sure the SE Arizona Birding group would love to see this. Yes, it is too dark as posted.

Steven: If you have no objection, I'd like to post a link to this to the ID Frontiers list server. Some of the best field birders in the world subscribe and comment there and it might allow you to get some opinions from people who know the western hummingbirds inside and out.

I can either post a link to NatureScapes or directly to a copy of the photo if you can supply a link. Either way I can sum up the responses and post here for anybody who is interested.

I posted this to ID-Frontiers. David Sibley has already weighed in with some very interesting information on pigment in birds. To follow the discussion without having to sign up for the list server, you can go to:
