Costa Rica 2008

IMO the key to a successful multi-flash hummingbird set-up is getting the lighting to look natural. It's easy to set up 4 or 5 flashes and take a test shot until the exposure is "right" - but often times the result is a totally front-lit bird and flower with no drama to the lighting. By carefully adjusting the positioning of your strobes (and actually metering each one independently) you can achieve the desired effect of some directional lighting where defining shadows and hightlights make the image look more "real".

A somewhat drab bird but one that only comes around for a minute or two at a time, so a special one to capture. :)

EOS 5D, 300/2.8IS, 1/250 @ f18, ISO 200, multi flash set-up.

Masterful use of flash Greg. Lighting looks very close to natural, perhaps even more so on the hummingbird. Wonderful work.

Tremendous image Greg. Just the right balance between simple and complex shapes and space. Perfect pose.

This is the technics I will probably never be able to learn, for we only have one species around and very few of them.
However, I admire the results of others. This is great Greg, love everything about it!

A very beautiful image Greg, but for me the lighting does not look natural. The BG also does not look natural.

This is indeed wonderful work getting all the flashes to sync nicely with different settings to each of them. But, I have to agree with Tim in so far as the lighting from top right on the flowers does not "seem right". The bird is fantastic in every way.

This is gorgeous Greg! Love the pose of the bird and its relationship to the flower.

a definite beauty, the lighting looks a tad over-cooked.

And one I missed last year. Their visits are VERY brief. Great shot of the species Greg. Perfect lighting job as expected ;)

Real neat image, Greg. I like the shadows and directional light giving the perch a 3D effect, but not sure why the hummer would not be lit up as much
Enjoy viewing

Greg:

I like the composition and the flowers look very nice, the Hermit looks a tad underposed.
