Hello,

I want to put the TC 1,4 AF-S on the TC 1,7 AF-S on my 200-400 4.0 VR AF-S. Is this possible and what do you need? Does anyone have experience with this?

Kind regards, Andrew

Yes, it can be done but it requires a simple modification to the front mounting ring of the TC-14E

Looking at the mounting ring you can see the three bayonet mounting tabs and an additional small tab near the release button. This small tab must be removed.

Carefully remove the four screws holding the mounting ring to the converter being careful not to gore out the heads. They can be difficult to remove. Some of the screws may be different length so pay attention to which hole they came out of so they be put back into the exact same location. Lift the ring off carefully so you don’t lose any parts.

Place the ring, clamped between two pieces of relatively soft wood so you don’t damage it, in a vise.

File or grind off the little tab. I used a Dremel tool with a little grinder and it only took a couple of minutes. Smooth off the ring where the tab was removed with emory paper if necessary.

Mount the ring back on the converter and replace the screws in the same holes they came out of.

DONE! Your converters can now be stacked. You must mount the TC-20E to the lens and the TC-14E between the camera body and the TC-20E. Looking at the ends of the converters will make this very apparent.

P.S. THIS WILL OBVIOUSLY VOID YOUR WARRANTY!

Thanks for the information Alan! So this can also be done with the TC 17 and the TC 14 instead of
the TC20? What about the optical quality?

From my limited experience of stacking teles on Nikon. You can stack the 2.0 and 1.4x or the 1.4x and 1.7x. You will need to stop down at least one stop past wide open for best results, and use good lens technique. This would mean: 2x + 1.4x on a f2.8 lens= use f11 or smaller aperture. The pics that seem to work the best are the ones in great light with a bit of contrast and tons of detail. I have tack sharp images with a Nikon F100 + 300 f2.8 1.4x and 2.0x. Also recently with my D2x (set to 2x crop mode) 500mm f4 plus 1.4x and 1.7x (a rediculous 2380mm), yet a very sharp image, with, of course, little depth of field, yet sharp! I'll try to dig this image up and post it.

Good luck pushing the limits!

Thank u, but it seems to be mechanically unpossible to stack the 1,4 with the 1,7? Or does anyone
have a picture how it should be done?

I don't have the 1.7 but once the modification is done to the 1.4 I don't see any reason why they can't be stacked just like the 2.0 & the 1.4 unless the rear element of the 1.7 protrudes too far. The mounts should be the same but if the rear element protrudes too far that could prevent stacking the 1.7 converter. In all cases the 1.4 should be mounted to the camera and the 1.7 or the 2,0 should be mounted between the 1.4 and the lens.

No can do. The rear elements are not recessed on the 1.7, as they are on the 2x.
