I have Windows Vista 64 bit on my photo computer and intend to upgrade to Windows 8 when it is released. I noticed in another thread that Royce intends to stay away from Windows 8 for a long time. What is bad about Windows 8? I don't want to create a problem, but sure need to upgrade from Vista. Is it just giving it some time to work out bugs or is it fundamentally flawed?

I would stay away for 6 months to make sure everything is worked out. I would upgrade to Windows 7 now though. Windows 7 is an exceptional operating system.

E.J., that makes sense. Now, which version and where to get a good deal? It would seem home premium is fine as I don't use more than 1 network or printer. I need to install on 2 computers.

If your system has 16GB of memory or less get Windows 7 home Premium. If it has more than 16GB get Windows 7 Professional. You will have to buy it twice to put it on two systems.

Just to add to what E.J. said, if you think you might need to run Win 7 in XP Mode you'll need Win 7 Professional.

I find myself wondering if Windows 8 isn't going to be like Vista--a bunch of new ideas packaged badly. Windows 7 repaired the flaws of Vista, leaving a pretty decent system behind, so we can only hope that Windows 9 will do the same for 8.

That article gives me the heebie jeebies. Win 7 will be around for a really long time like XP was (is). The problem is that anybody that doesn't build there own will have to live with Win 8 if they get a new system.

MS has a very long history of making a good OS in every other release i.e. fixing what went wrong in the prior release.

Win 3.1
95
Me
XP
Vista
Win 7
Win 8 appears to be poor from first reports
Win 9 ? but if it is true to history should be good

I wonder why you have 3.1 has being bad. In hindsight, it had a lot to be desired, but at the time, I thought it was great--a nice GUI (compared to DOS, with no GUI) and the ability to have multiple Apps running at once. Those implementations have improved greatly, but it was a pretty good OS at the time, and actually lasted several years.

You left 98 off that list... Also, 3.1/95/98/ME (all DOS based) were in released in parallel with the NT stream until they converged at W2K. (Actually all the systems from W2K on are in fact NT, and the other stream was dropped.)

But for me, I never used 95/98/ME, except for a thankfully brief period at work. (I recall when I started here in '96 we were using 95. I was doing analysis work in Matlab, and it kept crashing the 95 system (hard crashes, requiring a full reboot). The IT guy had started the switch to NT4 at that time, and I asked him to make my computer a priority for the upgrade. He said I was much lower down in his list (being fairly junior, I guess). I talked to my manager about the time I was wasting waiting for my computer to reboot several times a day, and the next day, I was upgraded to NT4. :) I've been happy with all the Windows OS I've used since--but we skipped Vista here at work (and at home).

NT4 - W2K - XP were three consecutive, very strong, systems. (I never used NT 3.x, so I don't know if there were more than three good systems in a row.)

Thanks for all the input. Looks like I will stay away from Windows 8, at least for a while. I will look for a multiple license pak for Windows 7. If memory serves, there is a 3 computer one available.

Windows Home can only address up to 16GB. Any more than that requires Professional or Ultimate. It simply means tht if you want to go over 16 on your system, you can.

Of course there are other reasons to use Professional or Ultimate, even if you don't have 16+ GB.

Will Windows 7 still be for sale after 8 comes out? If so, will the price go down with the new release?

Usually there is some overlap and usually the price does not change by much.
