Hand holding the Canon 1200mm 5.6

Postby Scott Elowitz on Thu Jun 04, 2009 12:40 am

The other day the B&H Used Photo Gear Department gave me the incredible opportunity to make a LensCoat for the one of the longest and rarest full auto focus lenses in the world. It was quite an experience working with a lens that when in it's case wouldn't fit in the back of my 4Runner without putting the seats down. Of course I told B&H that it was extremely critical that I field test the LensCoat to make sure it performs properly . With my insurance agent standing close by I deftly maneuvered this 38in long 36.4lb monster around my backyard in search of worthy subjects (birds and bunnies.) It's a good thing the 5dmk2 I borrowed had a camera strap on it.

This lens doesn't come with IS or DI (Image Stabilization or Disability Insurance) so I soon opted for a a sturdy tripod.

You'll probably need the "Fix" for that sucker. http://www.naturescapes.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=154592&start=20 Not that anyone's going to be carrying that Cannon 'over the shoulder style' anytime soon

You were lucky someone didn't think you were firing a surface to air missile and call the police when you had it on your shoulder.

My word, that is one humongous piece of glass. I can just imagine trying to carry that into my favorite marsh

"Scott" is actually 6-8 (all legs) so that lens is even bigger than it seems. :P

Just another SKU for the store...anyone want one in snow? ;)

Don't laugh, we shot it with the 1.4, 2.x, and stacked. We took stills and HD video in all combinations.

$599 for the lenscoat! It is a safe assumption that we won't be stocking these in the store. ;)

Considering the lens is discontinued (according to B&H, anyway), and they're selling a used one for $120,000  , I don't think you'd have a lot of market anyway, Greg!

Fun shots. I was going to buy that lens, but it doesn't have a 4/3rds mount to fit my Olympus. Hee....hee....hee.....
