Surfing the Last Rays

Anders Landin became interested in photography early in life. He got a Kodak Instamatic as a kid and started to explore the world around him with this camera. He was actively pursuing photography in high school and while at university in the mid-1980's. The tools at that time were the OM-10 and OM-40 (OM-PC) cameras by Olympus. The film of choice was usually the Kodak Plus-X or Tri-X and he did his own processing and black and white darkroom work. As university studies took more time, he put photography aside and remained largely inactive for almost 15 years. Anders bought a Canon Elan 7e and the 28-135IS lens after his first child was born in 1999. The intention at first was to take family pictures, but he rapidly rediscovered his old hobby - nature photography. Today Anders has fully embraced digital photography, and his Elan 7e still contains the same roll of half exposed Velvia as it did the day he got his Canon 10D.

Anders lives with his family in the San Francisco Bay Area. His favorite photography locations are along the Pacific coast of the San Francisco peninsula which he frequently visits weekend mornings and evenings. Anders reports that this shot was taken almost by accident. "I was at the coast playing with my family that day. We flew kites, built sand castles and explored the tide pools. As the sun was about to set I noticed the remarkable sky colors and my 4-year-old son and I went to assemble the camera. I took a few shots of back-lit breaking waves when I noticed the surfer. I got one decent frame with the surfer in a usable pose before the sun had set fully." The photo was taken at Davenport Landing, just north of Santa Cruz, California. Equipment and setting details for this image: Canon 10D, EF100-300L, ISO400, f/8, 1/160.
