HONORABLE MENTION
"Ermine"
Image copyright John Blumenkamp

I was fortunate last winter to observe this energetic ermine catch its prey and then carry it about with a certain degree of pride. Luckily, the new snow and soft morning light made for a nice settng and some ideal conditions to photograph. Due to its quickness, I had little time to setup a tripod as this particular ermine ran back and forth in all kinds of directions. I therefore shot handheld and also bumped my ISO setting to ensure a faster shutter speed, which was not as critical for this shot as this little guy paused at this particular moment with his prize. Canon 40D w/ 400 5.6L, 1/1600sec at f/5.6, ISO 250, handheld
