IMAGE OF THE YEAR
"Night Lit Barn"
Image copyright Robert Smith

The image was taken late in the evening (10:30pm) on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park. I choose the barns on the north side of Antelope Flats Road specifically because of the rail fence at the front of the barn. I setup the tripod in the sage grass and tried a couple test exposures without lighting, then began applying lighting to the scene with two 1 million candlepower spotlights. Using short bursts of light, I painted the fence and areas along the front of the barn, moving when the light was off to position for the next burst. It took 4 different exposures before I came up with this final image, varying the amount of light painting on areas of the scene. Nikon D3, 17-35mm lens, Gitzo tripod with Manfrotto geared head, cable release, Two 1million candlepower spotlights.
