Zion National Park - Where the Virgin River Runs
Image copyright Mike Pancier

My first visit to Zion in April 2007 got me hooked on the Southwest. Scenes like the Virgin River on a Spring Afternoon are foreign to this Florida boy. I wish I could have painted it. The next best thing was to photograph it and make it look how I would have painted it, if I knew how to paint.

Hiking there that day I was reminded of the Loggins and Messina song "Run River Run" -- hence the title. I used Lucis Art, a Photoshop plug in and AFX Edges in PS CS II to give it the painting effect. I then boosted saturation and that was it. EOS 5D, 24-105mm L.

About the Photographer

My full time job is as a lawyer in the area of labor and employment, civil rights, and intellectual property in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  But my passion is photography. I love nature photography because it gets me away from the city sights and sounds into the natural world. The digital darkroom is a lot of fun because it allows me to be creative and do what a painter does except with pixels. When not shooting landscapes, birds, or macro, I dabble in people and interesting cityscapes and architecture. A collection of my creations can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pancier/.
