Sunset Skimmers

Black Skimmers silhouetted by the setting sun were a happy accident. Seated on the beach thirty yards from a colony of Black Skimmers, I waited for a few skimmers to take off. As the sun was setting -- creating a brilliant orange lantern -- these two skimmers darted into the air. I tracked them as they blew into the "spotlight” creating this image. Canon EOS 1DM2, 300mm f/2.8 L IS, 1.4X TC, 1/1600s @ f/5.6, ISO 400, Av mode, comp -1/3, handheld.

About the Photographer

I've been an avid birder for over 20 years and have also a great passion for photography. A number of years ago, I coupled both passions and started making photographs of these beautiful creatures. It has now become my obsession to create the most unique images of birds in flight.  I am currently pioneering techniques and creating worldwide interest in action-flight bird photography.
