IMAGE OF THE YEAR
Wave
Foam Colors and Reflections
Image copyright Duke Coonrad

While
in Cannon Beach on vacation with his wife Kathy and their Tibetan Terrier
“Bugsy” in October last year, Duke Coonrad spent many hours
on the beach walking and letting Bugsy tear around. Strolling along the
beach on the last evening following a thunderstorm at low tide, he watched
the rogue waves break over the flat surface and noticed large amounts
of foam were left behind when the wave receded. Upon closer examination,
he discovered that the bubbles formed in the foam were multi colored and
reflected him when photographing the foam from directly overhead. The
image was captured with the Canon XLT digital body with an 18-55mm lens.
Duke
Coonrad, a retired investment banker and former Denver assistant District
Attorney, has been photographing seriously for approximately 20 years.
Since 2001, he has been shooting exclusively digital. He currently uses
Adobe Photoshop CS to color correct, adjust saturate resize and apply
output resolution, on all his photographs. He photographs with Canon 20D
and XLT bodies, with lenses ranging from 15mm to 500mm. His favorite photographic
subjects are travel, wildlife, flowers, landscapes, and, of course, his
grandchildren. Besides Seattle and The beautiful Northwest, Duke’s
other favorite photo locations are Yellowstone National Park and The National
Bison Range in Montana. He teaches digital photography courses including
basic Photoshop at the Mercer Island Community Center and the Bellevue
Club. He is currently represented by Tom Hazeltine who publishes 5X7 photo
cards with Seattle and Northwest Scenes and Wildlife.
