Herman Blockx was born in Belgium and has lived there his whole life. His fascination with nature began in early childhood and has continued since, including his studies in biology at university. He started photography roughly six years ago when touring South Africa for a month. His first camera was a Minolta SLR but later switched to the Nikon F801. In the spring of 2004 he started shooting digital after purchasing the Nikon D1. He works as a molecular biologist but all his free time is consumed with capturing a photo of almost every living critter, bird, or plant that crosses his path! Herman is learning every day, and finds the tips and support from friends at NatureScapes.Net to be priceless.

During the summer of 2004 Herman built a pond in the garden hoping to attract aquatic insects for macro subjects. The pond’s first resident was this frog and has become very well-photographed since moving in. Getting this particular image required laying flat in the mud.
