Hi,

When I was in Yellowstone a few winters ago I caught the beginnings of the rut at the end of my trip(late november). I met a person there who said that an excellent place is west of Cody Wyoming along the North Fork Highway west of the buffalo bill reservoir? I can't remember the exact directions but he said it was better than where we were photographing in Yellowstone because the sheep were on flat areas whereas we were shooting up the mountain at them in Yellowstone.
Does anybody have any knowledge of this area that they would be willing to share? I would be going after the 7th of December(Or even other areas would be of interest).

Perhaps the location you are looking for is described by Miles Hecker and can be found at http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locat ... orns.shtml. I have not been there, but it is on my list.

Thanks for that link , that looks like the area that was described to me. I always meet knowledgeable people in the field who give good advice, and I can't seem to develop a system of keeping track of the information. I think that I will remember it later, but the aging brain cells keep discarding it!

If you have a smart phone Evernote is a great note taking/keeping app.

I have made myself a folder in Outlook called Birding Locations.  All emails I want to be able to go back to, and including notes about other locations I send to that folder.

Otherwise I would have bits of paper everywhere and never be able to find them.

Same here.  Don't know what to blame it on.  Someone was giving me directions to a possible nesting owl and even showed me on the map.  I soon forgot.  When we next met, I had to ask again.  And forgot again.  I need to write it down right away or record a voice message.

I've been to the location west of Cody. Its about 30 miles west of Cody and past the reservoir. You can find the bighorns along the highway on both flats and on the red rock cliffs all the way to the east entrance of Yellowstone. I was there in early December 2012... it was pretty good! One of the largest bighorn rams I've seen anywhere was there....

Thanks for the info Bob! What other wildlife, birds or mammals can I expect(hope) to see?

Not much... its pretty barren there this time of year except for the bighorns. Windy, snowy, most subjects have migrated south or to lower elevations...
