This has been a long time coming and it includes all the new cameras:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829

You no longer need to search the web for third party Codecs so that the OS can display thumbnails of your RAW files. Just install this and you are good to go.

Why would you expect XP support. Support for that OS stopped a long time ago and quite frankly it is awful compared to Win 7. There is literally nothing about XP that is better than Win 7.

Just an aside; did you notice that JPL(Caltech, NASA) is still using xp on the large screen when the Mars landing happened.

They launched special build 80386 processors that I was in charge of manufacturing in 1987 in 2001 so I'm surprised they aren't using Windows 98 :)

Just as an aside, the rover, rover spacecraft, and orbiter all have processors based on the IBM PowerPC 750 (the BAE Systems RAD750), which powered the iMac in 1997...

I wouldn't go so far as to say awful...at least not in my case. But I am very glad to have updated to Win7. I used Win XP for the longest time and sometimes, a process/a Window would hang my whole PC. Now I can easily shut the misbehaving app down without having to reboot or anything.

Ok, I'm missing something. Sorry to ask this, but after installing the x86 codec for my Win 7 machine, I rebooted, per the instructions, but still don't see a thumbnail in Win Explorer. I checked images from a Canon 60D, 5D2 and my older Olympus RAW files and nothing was displayed.

What am I missing? The instructions on the Microsoft web site seemed pretty clear. Apparently I did something wrong, or am missing a key piece. Any thoughts?

Nothing wrong with XP, if it ain't broke don't fix it (but download the 128 updates you missed to make color profiles work properly!)

While I agree that it's unreasonable to expect them to support an OS that's two generations behind (well really only one generation behind, since we probably shouldn't count Vista as being a valid OS), it really wasn't that bad. The only significant advantage that I've noticed for 7 over XP is the ability to go to 64 bit. Of course, that's a *really big* advantage if you want more than 3 GB of RAM...

And frankly, I much preferred the file search utility in XP over the one that's in W7, so there is something better about XP.

Paul you installed the wrong Codec. You need the 64 bit one unless you are running the rare 32 bit version of Win 7, not the X86 one which is 32 bit.

Thanks E.J - installing the amd64 codecs solved the problem. I had assumed that since I was using an Intel chip, that I would need a x86 codecs. I never thought about a 'amd' codecs. Thanks for your quick reply. I'm up and running with thumbnails. :)

Cool. Just installed. Up to now I had been using FastStone Image Viewer which works really nice.
