Cool shot! If I remember correctly(memory isn't the best) they are called "piebald" when they are this color.

This is an example of leucism or loss of pigmentation.

As I understand it, the term piebald often, though not exclusively refers to leucism of the head area.
Bald eagle is a shortening of piebald eagle.
This guy has pigment on parts of his head so technically he's not piebald.

Interesting critter Stuart -- I especially like the composition and setting. The green looks nice (even though it looks like invasvie stilt grass.)

mhecker,
If you google "images of piebald animals", you get many photos of animals with dark heads and much of their bodies. I know the grackle photo was on Wikipedia, but there are many other examples besides that one. Who's right? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. The squirrel is just a unique subject and I hope to see one sometime. I know that there is a park in Olney, Illinois where there are many white squirrels. It's easy to Google it. A fantasy location for me.

Sweet shot of this interesting little critter. I like your nice saturated colors, the greens are very inviting. I also like that you gave the squirrel some space.

Nice image showing this cool squirrel. I was there a number of years ago and never was able to get any shots that I was satisfied with. The story goes that the non-albino whites were imported many years ago and as the years passed the white is being diluted by the natural grey.
It's interesting to see many that reminded me of Gremlins from the movie with that dark color between the ears and some with a dark streak down the back.

Great catch, never seen a white one. Cloning is a little distracting but the subject is well caught.
