They liked the camera, which isn't surprising given the fact that it's a great one!

They do like it but as their cool comparison tool shows, RAW files have no visible noise improvement over the 5DII....

I suspect Canon did not want to step on the toes of the 1Dx by giving the 5Dmark3 a step up in noise performance. :?

Neilyb, look at it again, remember to change one of the cameras to 5D3, and another one to 5D2, then cycle through multiple ISOs with each one. I see a significant difference, the 5D3 being better, especially when I look at the black edge of the coins.

I no longer feel such a strong urge to change brands - the 5D3 looks very good indeed.

Upto 6400ISO I have looked and looked but really apart from slightly less red splotches, they are there just not as red, in shadows there is no difference for me.

Neilyb, as I look at it yet again on my MB Pro, I don't see the difference I did before; I'm realizing the slight viewing angle difference of comparing one image above the other on my MB causes one image to look different. At some viewing angles I can clearly see the color blotches, and at a slightly different angle I don't see the blotches. I just never scrutinized noise on a black area on my MB before! As I change viewing angles and switch which square each camera model is in, I also see little difference between the two cameras. I yield to your original post!

I see a difference in the DPR review. Also, I have both the II and III and there's a definite improvement in noise in my own files. Besides, it's pretty much the only thing about this camera people generally agree on - that there IS noise improvement. The question hasn't been whether there is, it's how much. Consensus, from what I can tell, is between 1/2 to 1 stop.
Cheers,
Doug

1/2 a stop would be as far as I go on the RAW files.

Larson, I have a new Dell monitor at home and an Eizo at work, I am confident the shots look as good as they can compared to eat other. So thanks for the confirmation.

The high ISO are plenty good for 99.99% of the folks. Don't know why some folks complaining. Main thing was AF and it seems it has improved a lot where some sports folks taking 5dmk3 over 1dmk4 for night time shooting.

Don't you love it when we spend all of our time debating about 1 or 1/2 stop of light while some one else spends their time in the field and blows our images away with an 8 year old camera. I think any of the new cameras as a general rule are much less limiting than the person holding them (I include myself in that comment).

For me the biggest improvement is the autofocus, something I found the MKII to be lacking. While I did not have one I did borrow one on occasion for senior portraits and such. Scott you are right, for the most part these cameras are all very good and will yield excellent results in capable hands - we are splitting hairs:). I still remember film and some of the major limitations with that (especially shooting birds). So no major complaints from me:)

You're exactly right, Scott. And I haven't heard of any people deleting the images they took and liked back when they had a body that was a generation or two or three older than they have now. And Dan, I'll probably spring for the Mark III just for the autofocus improvement. I'd rather have a system based around the D800, but the multitude of $thousands it would cost to change is a stumbling block I can't do today.

The AF on the III is very good. I hesitate the call it the best yet because I haven't really taxed it's capabilities yet but I can say that I have had more keepers in the limited bird shooting I've done than any other Canon camera.

Doug

I upgraded from a 7D which I had owned since they came out to the new 5D Mk III and I am blown away. ISO ability and noise reduction is a whole new world with this new camera! AF is great. Usability is amazing. Almost as simple as the 7D with some nice added features. IQ is wonderful and far nicer than the 7D. Having a nice set of EF lenses has helped with the transition and I'm not complaining. I'm sure it will take a while to really learn to put all the great features to work, but I'm enjoying learning. Not a single day has gone by where I haven't had my paws on her since I brought her home. It's taken a little adapting to adjust to the full frame and loss of crop distance (this is my first full frame), but I'm really enjoying it!

The AF is worth the upgrade for what I do. Wish I had that with the 5D MKII which I still have. The 1D X is even faster!

Are there some reviews out on the 1Dx AF now?

They are shipping but I haven't found any. I was referring to my own experience with the camera.

Dear Maxis:

Am I correct in understanding your post to say that the EOS 1DX is shipping now?

Best regards,

Roman :-)
