I am wondering what Point and Shoot camera people are using and your brief thoughts on it? Me, I have the Canon G7, Fuji F30 and going to give the Canon S100 a try.

Hardly use the Canon G7 anymore, not because it doesn't still take very good photos...it does but it's bulky. Where do I put it while walking around? Fuji F30, still bulky. So, I use the iPhone alot. But the Canon S100 looks really compact. So, yes....my priority is compactness. Having said that...I was momentarily tempted by the new Fuji X10 for its fast lens (f2.0 to 2.8 at max zoom of 112mm?). But there is the still unresolved orb issue. I have found the Fuji's to have one of the best close-up flash results (that's the case with the F30 and based on what I have seen of the x10 images it produces the same results with close-up flash).

Have the Canon S95 and frankly the digital noise for landscapes at all ISOs is unacceptable to me. Compared to a Dslr, I am only happy with it for people shots with flash.

I have an S95. Not sure when I got it but over a year and have to check. Just noticed a blurry spot in the middle of a shot the other day. Looking close there's something inside the front element.... might be a fungus or something. It lives in my loose cargo pocket for quick easy grab shots when I don't have my dslr's handy. I've been happy but now it looks like it will be $160 standard repair fee if I decide to fix it.

G10, and I can only stand it at ISO80 or 100, and even then only for people shots. The more I use it , the more I hate it due to it's crappy menu system/control layout, bulk and mediocre IQ at best. Looking forward to upgrading to m4/3's camera at some point, some of them don't seem much different in terms of size and weight.

I have a Panasonic LX5. I thought I would use it more than I have so far. Often end up using my cell phone for quick pics. Nevertheless, when I do use it I'm pleased by the results.

S95- wish the flash did not guarantee red-eye - but fine for stuff that's just funning around- keep it in my tackle box for fishing pics.

Pentax Optio (W70??) - waterproof. Really nothing special, except that it IS "shockproof" and waterproof. Hate the lack of a viewfinder, it's ony 7 or 8 mb's, but that's more than enough for that tiny sensor - too noisy! It does do video, though - ocassionally fun, but I don't want to pay for it on a dslr.
Good light,
Craig

I have an Olympus XZ-1.
It has the best lens of any point & shoot camera I have ever seen.
It is tack sharp from edge to edge.

I use a Panasonic LX3. Like it. Small, compact, has a lot of features and controls. I find it easy to carry and delivers decent results. Is it as fine as grain as a D700? No. But it is a point and shoot. Think of it as a compliment to a DSLR not a competitor. Packs a big punch in a small package. Takes images that to me make a better 12x18 than 35mm film ever did.

I did an article here on NSN last year about it called Small Format

http://www.naturescapes.net/docs/index.php/category-photographic-technique/41-photographic-technique/445-darren-huski

You can also see some images in my website I got with it.

http://www.wildernessphotographer.net/SpecialCollectionImages/Small-Format-Landscapes-1/15446418_Pk4KSr#!i=949785900&k=rC8MB

Other similar small camera like the newer LX5 or Canon S100 or the Fuji or Oly ZX1 will be similar.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I was using the Olympus XZ-1. I'm now using the Nikon 1 V1. (When I'm not using the iPhone 4 instead)

I have the Canon S95. It is a great camera for landscape.
You can carry with you anywhere in your pocket and it takes very nice pictures.
I tried it indoors too but it did not work very well.
Maybe the light was too dim.
The Canon S100 is even better.
It starts at 24 mm and has a built in GPS if I'm correct.

I have a Canon S90, but it just doesn't get used because the IQ is just too poor. For any image where IQ doesn't matter much and thus an image out of the s90 would be acceptable, the iPhone would be just as acceptable, so that's what I use.

I have a Panasonic LX5 and really like it for travel when taking the bigger gear is not an option. Or I just don't feel like dragging it around. Lots of options for shooting in RAW, exposure comp, etc. I had an LX3 and had to upgrade. Fantastic P&S.

I am not being a smart aleck here: my point and shoot is my Canon Mark IV, 16-35 f 2.8, 580II speedlight. I already own it and know how make it work.

Why buy more stuff, especially if it is inferior? The more I stick with one top camera body, the better I get with it. It is relatively lightweight considering I am used to carrying the big 800mm rig.

Because it's not inferior at all if size, weight, and "pocket-ability" are your priorities.

Mine's a Samsung Enfuse, and it even has a phone feature!

Steve....if you are touring abroad it is not always fun to lug around even that equipment for 2 weeks on end. Doesn't make for a very fun vaca in my books. Sometimes you want something pocketable....especially when in a building where no photography is allowed ;) And concealable to take street photos like a Leica or P&S. Or just for your kids soccer game. Everyone has different desires and it makes the world go 'round.

I keep a Nex 5 with a 18-200mm lens in my car when I am too lazy to carry my Canon gear or if I believe the photo opportunities are minimal. It paid off the other day in a big way when one of the three Canon G's that I have owned in the past would not have had the reach. You can have your primary equipment with you 95% of the time, but who knows what you may run across the other 5% of the time?
