Hi Everyone,

I've been checking out pricing ideas on other forums, and I want to get your 2 cents worth.

I have an ad agency that wants to know what I would charge for a print that's 9 feet wide by 3 feet tall for one of their clients. The print cost will be about $645, plus $240 for my time to pick up the print from the printer and deliver it to the client. That's a total cost of $885.

I've had suggestions that include:
* Charge $2 per square inch
* Charge 2 or 2.8 or 4 times my cost

This results in a price range from $1,767 to $7,776.

Any price suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeff

Is it just a straight print? You mention ad agency, which makes me think there is advertising involved in some way which would normally be a whole different pricing system.

Hi Neil,

I found out that they want to buy the print from me, then they will contact the people on their donors list to pay for it. I'm guessing they hope to collect more money than what the print costs, and the organization (a hospice) will keep any excess money from the donors to help run the organization. They have a local ad agency doing the setup (finding the photograph, getting the print, sending out the donor letters, etc.) probably because they don't know how to do this themselves.

Have Fun,
Jeff

Well I'd suggest you've already worked out what to charge for your time, so base the charge on the time component plus print cost plus margin on the print cost. so assuming a 100% margin that might be: 645 x 2 plus 240 coming to $1540.

Collectors of photography seem to consider any print under about $20K as floor scraps. Wish I knew some collectors who liked my work!

Check out the prices at the Lik Gallery in La Jolla CA. I about fell over when I had a client state she bought one of his prints for $45,000. I fell over again when she complained it had only doubled in price on Ebay. The other one she was considering trippled. No kidding.

Thanks Steve. I visited two of his galleries in Las Vegas a couple years ago. His prices are amazing, too bad his photographs aren't. I'll check out his website to see his current prices. Thanks.

Have Fun,
Jeff
