Due to a new law requiring collection of state sales tax, no more website click through money for us Californians who link to BH, Adorama, Amazon and the like.

The sneaky have all "relocated" to business friendly states. I give up. I link to BH and Adorama gratis. Always hated Amazon's flaky shopping experience, but they paid way more than the others.

Would not be surprised if this becomes a federal law. Lovely.

The main reason that the web is tax free is the nightmare of trying to track each state's sales tax (they change frequently). And what about county, and city tax?

So California ups their tax rate by .25% on Monday, but they don't update some national tax collection database until Friday. Do they lost the extra tax from Monday through Thursday? They can't go back to all those customers and charge them another .25%. Would the Federal Government pay the state for lost tax?

And then the states would have to track the city and county of each sale and send them the appropriate tax. And would the tax be collected from the state where the item is purchased or where it's delivered. And some states want to charge a tax if the product passes through them while being delivered.

I don't think the government (federal, state, county and city) are smart enough to come up with a foolproof software system that could deal with all of this, not to mention other issues I didn't cover.

Have Fun,
Jeff

If you were previously a California affiliate of Adorama and therefore affected by this new legislation, you should have received an update in the past couple of days - which could be of benefit to you.

If you have not, please email me directly: Helen@adorama.com
