Am wondering what other's thoughts are regarding Nikon's decision to exclude the built-in flash from the D500.  I do not like it.

Does Nikon say it was done to help weatherize the body ?

Do you suspect it was done to force you into that new flash they have ?

Down the road, do you think, Nikon will come out with a similar DX body that has a built in flash; i.e. same new AF system, deep buffer and same sensor but maybe slightly cheaper build ?

Here are some thoughts from Mr. Hogan:

I like having a pop up flash available. There are a few times where it saved my butt. The reason they did it was for a larger viewfinder image and better weather sealing and maybe to sell some more flashes. Do note there are a number of small flashes out there that don't take up al of the room of the big flashes that you can attach for when you need one.

I only use the built in flash as a commander and as i have a SU800 thats rare, I have no problem in the lack of pop up flash

I use the pop up flash for lots of things; with just one of them being used in "commander" mode. The D500 not having one is a huge factor for me and one that I am really disappointed about. I know this is not meant to be another D500 thread, but there really is only one aspect of the D500 that might entice me to look at it; and that is if the higher ISO performance is significantly better than the D7200.

Not having it makes the D500 more attractive to me. Any time that I have tried to use it in the past (when I forgot my flash or was too lazy to get it out) I have been disappointed with the results. I have an SU800 and a Yongnuo wireless transmitter to fire external flashes if needed but I do understand that using as a commander could be handy. For me the pop up flash just gets in the way when I bump the release button by mistake.

Check out the Nissin i40 or i60 for a small compact but much more powerful flash than any built in flash :D

That might be a convenient solution.  Get in the habit of keeping it in a pocket when shooting the D500 and just pop it on when needed.

another, not affected by the lack of a pop up flash.... to me, it's more appealing without.. If I need some remote flash work: (I only consider pop up flashes as useful commanders...), I'll use my pocket wizards...

E.J. ......... do you think that this Nissan i40 might synch at any shutter speed I choose on the D500 (I hope) ?

In other words, with this i40 can I use the Auto FP high-speed sync mode that is on many Nikon DSLR cameras?  I am assuming the D500 has this.

Probably not huh?

Thank you ahead

Sorry, there was a lot of needless junk included in the first post; I just edited it to make it clearer/simpler.

EJ,

Do the old flashes still work. The 900, 700 etc?

Yes, no issue with them.

Just was anxious if this Nissin i40 would work in Nikon's FP high speed synch mode.  I guess according to this article it can, right up to 1/8000.  The writer does reveal that the i40 does not have illuminated controls.

Yes it works exactly the same way as a Nikon flash ISO that regard.
I wrote a review of that flash for Nikon 2 years ago and the Sony version about a year and a half ago.
Note there is now an i60.

E.J.

I found and read this link.

Your review is clear, brief but thorough.  It answered the questions I had about this i40, including your rationale for justifying the simple, non-LCD controls and that it synchs at high speed.  This thing sounds like an exciting....maybe even vital piece for popping some light into a tight situation.

Thank you.
