I have been reading reviews of the Sony 24-240 lens with the thought of using it as an all purpose walking around/travel lens with my A7rII.  There are some obvious compromises in optical quality with a zoom of this range but I was just wondering what actual users os this lens thought...

Thanks for any advice

As long as you are OK with putting a lens that on a good day will resolve maybe 18 megapixels on a 42 megapixel camera, there is no problem with it at all. The lens is a much better match for an a7 II or a7S II or a7 or a7S than it is for either or the R cameras. It's basically the same as putting the 28-300 class lenses on a D810 or a Canon 5DsR from a resolution standpoint - it's convenient but you are going to basically negate the whole purpose of the camera.

Thank you EJ--Deep down I knew there was no such thing as a free lunch but I liked the way you described it..

So - what lens would people use as a reasonably compact "walk around" lens for the Sony a7 range (emount, full frame)?

Another option, if it's just for walking around snapshots is to use the camera in crop mode by attaching the Sony-Zeiss 16-70 E-mount which is 24-105 equivalent and you still get 19 megapixels on an a7R II

If you want really small walkaround I have been using the Sony 28mm f2 for some time. I was unsure at first but it is actually nice to push yourself with only a single focal length. Great for family pictures and using it wide open really adds a kick to portraits. If I see a wider shot I want I stitch a few together. Not so keen on distortion but it is easily fixed. Maybe not everyones cup of tea but I am loving it.

Still. Cannot wait for the new Loxia ;-)

My walkaround has been the Sony 35 2.8 but it has some issues. I now use the 25 Batis mainly and stitch if needed. It does leave me wanting a bit more length at times, but the camera has so much resolution that I can crop into it. My 24-70 is a bit soft else that would have been perfect.
