Apparently the lens rental companies have somehow obtained the first available batch of Nikon's new 300mm lens. You can't buy one but you can rent one, mine will be here Thursday...the reach I want, the weight I can carry, the IQ I require. I'm completely  excited.

I wonder if the VR has been corrected and this is a soft re-release?

I have the new 300/4 PF…really like it, uber light, short and very sharp. Mine has the VR fix, since it's a newer SN below, and I wasn't able to notice the reported issue (so I believe Nikon fixed it fine).

Newer lenses with SN's 205101+ should have the fix on them. cheers, dj

Am looking forward to your comments on this new, exciting Nikkor.

I remain believing that with Canon's 500D attached to the front, this lens will double as a superb offhand close up lens.

If my 80-400 AFS did not please me in so many ways….. I would buy this new 300 f4 VR Nikkor as soon as it came available. And I also would be renting it first.

A couple my wife and I shoot with regularly both use the new Nikon 300mm f4 fresnel lenses and were only able to obtain them by being on a waiting list at a local camera store. They got one at a time, so it looks like Nikon is shipping them one at a time to camera stores here in California, about one every month or so.

We had lengthy discussions of whether they should get the 80-400 or the new 300. Weight, sharpness, and AF speed were all considered and the new 300 won. We just spent 3 weeks together on a photo tour and I was amazed at how clear the zoomed in images were on their LCDs of their D 810s.

I hear you can turn a "rent" to a "buy" if you really like it...
