Currently using a D50 with the original ver of the 80-400vr, was looking to upgrade and normally buy bodies used like I did back in 2006 when I picked up my D50. Considering a D300S for bird photography mainly, see link for one I can get locally used. Is this a reasonable price for this body, thanks for any info or input.

I have been seeing D300s bodies on Craigslist in the Rocky Mountain region for $600-650. D300 bodies are going for about $350.

D300s will serve you well. That was my second camera after I got rid of a D40. I currently have a D7100 which I love, but miss the awesome buffer that camera had.

Depending on your budget, you might want to consider a used D7100 now that the 7200 update has been released.

D300s is still the best built DX body that Nikon makes. The sensor doesn't live up to today's standards but the body is excellent and it has a better frame rate than any DX camera in the Nikon lineup too which can be useful for birds.
