Anyone having any experience with a  Nikon D810 in the DX mode with a Nikon 300mm F/2.8 VRll with a Nikon 1.7x tele? If so, do you think it is as good, better or worse then a D7100 with the same lens/tele combo?

Thanks
George

As good, better or worse in what ways?

I would think the D7100 would have better image quality than a DX mode 810 using the 300 VR II. I would also think it would depend with the TC-17 since it degrades the image significantly. The D810 wouldn't see it as much since you only have 15 mp versus the 24 mp on the D7100.

I have a D800E and a D7100. For long lens work, I switch between the two depending on the angle of view I need. I start with the D800E in FX and 1.2x mode and will switch to the D7100 (if I have time) to handle DX and 2x modes. I only tend to add a teleconverter if the 2x mode on the D7100 isn't enough and I'll only use a TC-14. (was a TC-14 II and is now a TC-14 III)

George - I have shot quite a bit with a D800E, 300VRI and TC17. Wide open is f/4.8 and I find that a little soft, but f/5.6 is pretty good. I can't help you with the comparison to the D7100.

Rory
