I will start a new thread - hopefully it will be confined to discussion about processing images from the 7DMkII.

I received my 7DII on Monday and got a chance this morning to give it a serious try. I have heard a lot of criticism about the DPP software, so I took both a RAW and large JPG on every shot. I tried processing both the RAW and the large JPG to the same size (800 pixels max. dimension and 72 dpi) that I use for posting on the web.

I was stunned. The final product from the large JPG original looks much better than the final product from the RAW original.

I hope 7DII users who have better luck with the DPP software will chime in and provide some help on getting the best results with the DPP.

Strange, even with the best JPEG i can get SOOC i can process my RAW file to outresolve or beat that same JPEG, i did shoot RAW+JPEG for some shots with best settings on camera, then i processed the RAW, i've got always better results with processed RAW than JPEG either processed or non processed, so i can imagine if someone can't make RAW to look better or as same as JPEG then it is problem of the user and his processing.

I agree wholeheartedly when I am able to use ACR to convert my raw images. ACR not useable for RAW's from 7DII.

Yes it does, it was released last night and was announced here on NSN in both the Digital forum and the 7D Mark II thread ;)

I have tried to use DPP over the years and always find it lacking.  Maybe I just don't know how to get the most out of it. Now that LR and ACR are updated I just won't worry about it and use my usual LR and PS work flow.  One thing I seem to notice(but I want to check it out a bit more) is that the 7D2 files clean up very easily and sharpen very well.  I, so far have used less aggressive sharpening than on the old 7D and my 1D4.

That means it likely has a weaker anti-aliasing filter than the previous models which wouldn't be a big surprise.  Canon is really the only one left that even uses one on the 20+mp APS-C sensors.

Definitely a weaker anti aliasing filter which means, if you leave the camera on default sharpening while shooting jpeg or transfer the in camera settings for raw, you do not have to do much, if any sharpening.

One way to go is same as always, select the subject, inverse the selection, denoise it. Go back to the subject selection, put a 2 pixel blend edge, and sharpen it if you need.

Filter or no is a non issue for this camera, as is the amount of pixels, as this camera is an action, long reach rig, not appropriate for folks wanting the best landscape camera which is obviously the Nikon D 810 or Canon 5D III.

My cruise about combo rigs are now simple: One shoulder- Canon Mark IV (to be replaced with the Canon 5D III) with the 16-35 2.8 for my wide rig, and the 7DII with the 70-300mm IS white wonder lens on the other shoulder. I am using my 800mm less and less because it takes so long to deploy and is tiring to lug.
