I encounter intermittent AF failures (AF just went dead) on my D7100 with the captioned lenses viz AF-S 300/4D (with or without TC14E) and AF-S 80-200/2.8D straight. Both lenses works flawlessly with my other bodies D200 and D800.

Also my D7100 has no AF issue with my AF-S 500/4D (with or without TC14E) and other lenses including the AF-S 28/1.8G and AF-S 300/2.8D (with or without TC14E and TC20E).

I've visually checked for lenses alignment, physical fitting and pin contacts (height) and they both appear normal. Contacts were cleaned but to no avail.
I cannot loose the idea that it's a matter of tolerances on the contacts and D7100 is less tolerable (tight spec?); just a little bit too much space causing the AF pins to loose contact. By twisting the lens within its 'play' I can sometime get its AF to work again but not always ... Or could there be firmware bug(s) in the D7100?

Wonder if it's an unique pairing/ compatibility problem?
Your experience and insight on these combos?

hello kk.
I do not have a d7100 but do have a D5100 and as of today a new D5300. I do have both the lens you listed. My 300 stopped working on my d5100 in exactly the same way you detailed. I can get it working again occasionally but with limited results. I too have a D200, D700 and I sold my d800 recently to get the d810. My 300 lens works fine on all the other cameras including the new d5300 I got today. I too did all the cleaning contacts/examining points you tried to no avail. I was hoping it was just my d5100 as it was in a car accident with me.

I do hope the same problem does not happen with the new d5300. I think it is some type of failure in the 'internals' of the camera. Will be keen to see what you find out.

You may want to tighten screws of the camera and lens mounts (with a JIS spec screw driver)

Checked all screws on both the lenses/ TCs and body mount. They are all tight and none of them are loose in anyway.

I even blow clean the AF sensor located at the bottom and behind the mirror on my D7100.
It doesn't make a difference unfortunately.

I had this phenomenon occur to me on a recent trip to Tanzania. I have the D7100 and used a Nikor 200-400mm lens, 80-400mm, and 24-70mm lens. They all work flawless on the D7100. I also brought a rented D800E along as a backup. I had the intermittent AF failure after the second day with the 200-400 lens on the D800E. I found that if I twisted the lens within its play the AF would come back but not reliably. Tried cleaning the contacts on the lens, Teleconverter (1.4II), and D800E. I still could not tell if it helped or not as the intermittent AF came back.

Hope Mike in O's solution works for this.

I too did a blow clean on the sensor and mirror etc. and had the screws on the lens/camera tested at my local camera store, they were fine. It is a most frustrating problem and I have missed several great bird photo ops because the camera/lens combo would not focus.

I use the 300/4, 500/4, and 200-400/4 on my D7100 all alone and with 1.4x and 2x and have not had any problems. The 300/4 + 1.4x is my main rig in the kayak so it gets bumped around a little. It sounds like I am lucky to not have these issues.
