I recently bought a nikon 300mm f2.8 VR II which I use in combination with a 1.4 TC II, now I'm thinking of buying a 2.0 TC III to use with this lens.
I'm hesitating a bit because of the costs and the loss of IQ. I'm using the lens with a D7100

Does anyone have experience with this lens and TC combo?
How do U think it works out sharpness wise?
Do U have any example pictures? (if possible 100% view so details can be viewed at 1:1)

Thanks in Advance,

Richard

I have the 2x TC, but I have no experience with the specific combination you are asking about. However I recently saw a David Lloyd image of a yawning lion taken with the 400mm f/2.8 plus 2x TC combination @ f/8. By whatever means he got amazing detail out of the combination at least at web size. I'd imagine the latest 300mm f/2.8 would have similar quality.

The reviews seem to agree with the above statement. f8 seems to be the magic number. Some have stated this TC was optimized for the 300 f2.8's. I don't know if it's true but they (along with the 200 f2) seem to produce the best results. I just got one, so as soon as I can fine tune it I'll let you know my 2 cents worth. I know nsn's Mr. Peiker isn't a fan of this TC but I have seen a lot of very good to excellent images around the net with the combo you mention.

I have been using a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VRII with and without the Nikon 1.7 TCII, not quite the combo you asked
about but similar on either my D7000 or more recently my D7100.  I tried both the 1.4 TC (too little gain) and 2.0 TC III but returned them (I currently have an order in for Nikon's new 1.4TC).  In my hands it seems that any TC does cause a loss in sharpness so I prefer not using one though I still do sometimes add the 1.7 TC for the extra reach.  I don't have photos directly comparing with and without though you can see some examples with the 1.7 on my posted pics on flickr (on the EXIF data the 500mm shots are those with the 300mm lens and the 1.7 TC).

Hope this is ok to put up a thread from another nature photography forum. Just trying to help out.

As you will see, Lance B (in this thread) really impresses with his 300 2.8 VR II and the TC 2.0 III

Hope this helps you.

Thnx for the replies all. Seeing the photo's and comments of other I decided to bite the bullet. In the end it has to be me to judge if I like the quality or not.

Greetings,

Richard

Richard I have the Nikon D7100 and Nikon 300mm F/2.8 VR ll and the Nikon 1.7 and 2.0lll teles. You do lose some sharpness, but it is what it is because you are putting more glass between your subject and the sensor. I have some photos on NS with both the D7100+1.7 and 2.0lll and I also have a flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/gwhalen. About 90% of my flickr and NS photos are with my Nikon 300mm+teles. I use Adobe PSE 12 and with a few adjustments I can get great results. I generally use the Nikon teles in great light(sunny conditions). I find that the auto focus with the D7100+ the teles pretty darn close to the lens itself, (no bull) with no problem of locking on to BIF or moving subjects. I have to admit that you have to have excellent technique for hand holding or a tripod with the 2.0 tele. If I had any advise to give is, try the combo for yourself. Best of luck.

Physical strength and fast shutter speed will certainly help.
