Hi All,

My lens hood screw will no longer tighten and hold my lens hood in place. Anyone have any experience with this either going through Nikon or DIY? I haven't asked yet, but I assume Nikon will want me to ship my lens to them for the "repair" since they stopped selling replacement parts to individuals. Any help would be much appreciated.

The clip with the hole is probably stripped, drill a smaller hole into some thin metal and glue onto the clip.

Look on ebay for the necessary parts. I remember seeing a do it yourself fix for this somewhere but I haven't found it yet.

I'd think you would only have to send in your lens hood for repair, not your entire lens.

Mine stripped out about 7-8 years ago and the parts alone were over $50.00. I'd bet they'll hit you for at least $200.00 to fix this. Hope I'm wrong.

apart from the above good advice, you don't mention which 500 Nikon lens. (the AF-S II is notorious for it's hood screw failing... I've gone through two.. the later Nikon lenses fixed this with a more robust screw)...

Mine is an AF-S (first version). Only happened once and it was my fault for over tightening it.

Thanks all. My 500 is the AF-S II. It's definitely stripped. All I did was loosen it like I have 1,000 times and then it wouldn't tighten the next time I tried. I haven't been able to check that link out yet because I've been at work all day. The tip with getting another piece of metal and screwing it through there seems like it will work and I'll check out the link when I get home. I really appreciate all the replies.
