Why do we refer to F stops, and then they change it to A for aperture on the camera dial?

Should be F ?

What do you think?

f stands for focal ratio or the ratio of the focal length to the entrance pupil - it's the f-ratio. An f-stop, is anything smaller than that as controlled by an aperture diaphragm. Each halving of the light is considered one stop. So the APERTURE controls the F-number. It all is very logical and makes perfect sense.

For the same reason that we park in the driveway and drive on the parkway.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.
