From those that own an OM D
I am looking for the specifics on the file size and type when shooting the OM D in what they call “Digital Tele Converter” or Digital Zoom. What I want to know is what exactly you end up on the SD card. From what I can read in the manual it is a RAW format but it really doesn’t say what happens to file size and or results of the Tele convertor. i.e is this just a in camera crop of the full size RAW… I may be better off just cropping the larger RAW image as get the same results.

I am using the GH2 at the moment for our daily dog walks and adventures with lots of success ( see my gallery in my profile) with the 100-300 which gives me a solid 600mm lens but on occasion I trigger the 2x tele zoom for those far reach shots and a 1200mm look. The GH2 Digital Tele convertor multiplies the image and view in the Electronic Viewfinder by 2 and leaves me with a reduced JPG image only.

If the OM D does the same reduced file size but leaves me with a RAW image I would be much happier as the RAW image would clean up and be better for post processing.

I am looking at a change up to the OM D 5 as my travel /hiking camera for some of its added features but would like to know as above as well.
Thanks for any informmation you can give
Doug

Don't know the specifics, but cropping later and digital zoom will give the same results, there is nothing magic that can be done to get more magnification. The plus side of cropping later is that you can fine tune your crop.

The 2x digital zoom on the OM-D is actually much better than I expected - I might be able to get something similar by doing it in PS, but the quality is very good for what it is, and there's no work involved. Assuming you shoot RAW+JPEG, what you'll end up with on the card is a zoomed JPEG of whatever size you've specified and an un-zoomed RAW file, so it really is the 'best of both worlds'.

I have 2x mapped to the Fn1 button on the back of the OM-D (since I can't find a back-button focus setting that feels right) so I can trigger it very easily, either to assist in focusing exactly where I want or to do what you are looking for - get a 1200mm equivalent JPEG very easily, and with decent quality.

Thanks Rick that is what I was understanding from the manual as well ...The GH2 doesn't allow you to get a RAW file from using the 2x so the added RAW from the OM D is a bonus as well as multiple exposure feature, weather proofing, high shutter speed and better AFC ....these little cameras are proving their worth for quick and easy travel and "walk abouts". Time to find a OM D which is in short supply everywhere. :(
