After shooting about 100 frames today, I realized that the +/- controls in the D800 are backwards to the D300 and D700. Yeah, I know I should have paid more attention, but I was excited and wanted to play. Why the heck would Nikon change the direction you turn the exposure +/- control. This is going to take me sometime to get used to this, as the old way has been ingrained into this old brain of mine. Plus it is going to be difficult to move back and forth between the D800 and D700. This just seems totally NUTS to me? I was hoping I could find something in the menus to reverse it to what I am used to, but can't find anything. I am surprised I haven't seen much mentioned about this, as it is pretty darn annoying!

Tim,
go to f12 "Reverse indicators" in the custom settings bank menu. You can switch it to be the same as your D700.

I have actually changed my D700 to indicate as the D800. For me it is intuitive to increase exposure by heading right.

Okay, I made that change with f12, but it is not doing what I want it to do. I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. All that selection does is reverse the indicators in the viewfinder, BUT it does not change the direction you rotate the command wheel. On my D300 and D700 I rotate the wheel to the right to go minus and to the left to go plus. It is the opposite on the D800 and I can see no way to make it rotate the way I am used to. It makes no sense to have the minus on right if the wheel makes the adjustment in the opposite direction.

They changed to the same standard that everyone else uses - right +, left -. I had reversed my older cameras so for me it was perfect out of the box :)

On Nikons just about any dial can be reversed or the functions can be reassigned.

Tim,
You can get configuration you want - also need to fiddle with CF9 "Customize Command Dials" - it will let you reverse the direction of the command dials

This threw me for a big loop when I first shot with my D800, too. I had to make several switches in the custom functions to get back to Nikon "normal." The Bracket Button where the ISO button is on the D700 still fools me.

Thanks guys . . . . . I did not even know about those menu functions until now. So I have the D800 all setup and I am happy with it now. I decided to set it the way I had always been used to; i.e. the same as my D700. The button that still gets me now is the video button on the top right. I am so used to adjusting the +/- while I am shooting that I keep using that button instead of the proper button beside it. I'm sure I'll get used to it in no time.

I use the easy exposure compensation function where you do not need to use the button on top of the camera, Just use the dial, CF B4

This was a major PITA when I moved to Nikon from Canon, and like E.J. I altered the behavior right away. Now that the D800 and D4 cameras work like the rest of the world, I don't have to change a thing. I understood the logic behind the 'old' Nikon way of doing it, but I didn't like it at all. Glad they made the change.
