Sony keeps it in a proprietary maker's note in the EXIF. Here is a web tool that works with most Sony cameras to give a shutter count:

The count when it appears in schema is not correct, I think it counts up to 100000 or something then sets a flag each time it reaches it, so a 1DIIn file I have for example is 53679 in schema when read by PS, but when I check with this utility:

it reports the count to be: 250287
