Well I am not sure how I feel about this one, but I liked the scene.   The ruby spot on the wing was really glowing in the bright light.  I broke one rule as the sun was very high and there was strong directional light hitting the subject.     Vingette added to help tone down the edges.

Any comments welcome, thanks!

Hi

I think if this was taken with a loner focal length lens the lighting would have been more of a problem - as seen I suspect a little bit of flash would have helped balance the look a little better, but the directional harsh lighting does bring out the main body areas nicely - so for me it works

All the best
Matthew

Certainly a different take here that seems to work nicely.

The head detail looks really good, and the backlight makes the wings look great.
American rubyspot is a rare find in my area - congrats!

Kevin, this looks real cool. Cannot imagine using 8mm for subjects like these. You did well and I agree that red spot comes across nicely as a result of the backlighting.

It works for me! Your subject pops beautifully from the surroundings Kevin.
