Bought a small potted cactus while I was shopping at the local Home Depot, in part, because it had these interesting looking purple flowers that hadn't yet opened. I set up for some desktop shooting to follow the progress of the flowers opening and of the new growth. I noticed this strange ooze at the base of the flowers...had never seen that before...how odd, but interesting. The ooze was hard, not at all gooey or sticky.
So I am following the progress of the new growth, waiting for the flowers to open, when I notice that as the new growth shown in the background of the shot continued to grow upright, that the flower was moving up with it. How strange! I began to wonder if the flower was growing out of the new growth in some way. I tried to gently move the flower around a bit too see the base when it came off in my hand. On further examination, I figured out the puzzle. Can you? Len Romanick
