Nikon D90
105mm 2.8 macro lens
handheld, manual mode, pattern metering
ISO 400   1/2500@f5.6 with SB-600 flash with softbox in the hotshoe

Captured this hoverfly in flight as it worked my pea plants. Conversion to B&W resulted in a nice feel while eliminating a difficult background.

I think you are right the B&W look does seem to concentrate to view and simplify the compositional look - I think it works nicely
