I've just updated my blog with some thoughts on recent shooting; here is one shot I discuss there, together with my notes on it:

Nikon D800E/200f4micro/cpl
Stack of 8 frames at ISO 100 f/8 + 1 blended at ISO 1000 f/16 for water droplet

My own self-critique:

Technically good, though lighting could be better, and the very front of the image could be a little sharper (i.e. I needed to start the stack a mm or two further out – my fault for not fully checking live-view for focus accuracy at the start of the stack). Again, subject a little central. Droplet and fly are both cool, but vie for attention a little bit too much perhaps. Colours a little too uniform maybe?

Any comments from anyone else most welcome!!

Thanks,
Dave

Lovely rich colors and an excellent main subject and hanger on.

On your self criticism: The front edge of the mushroom cap is slightly soft, another image in the stack would have helped. I think you would be disappointed with the detail in a print. In a vertical composition, I don't think centering is an issue. The background rendering is very pretty. I find the bright chunk of leaf litter in the right foreground distracting. I don't think the fly and drop compete.

Hi

Like Tom in this example I don't mind the central composition because there are some decent angles / lines that help distract from this element. Sharpness wise its a hard call because I don't stack, hence I think its reasonably sharp throughout considering image size but I tend to judge things as a single shot approach. Lighting wise, I think I would tend to agree in that I like the colour temp and warmth of the seasonal colours, bit I think a subtle introduced light might have added some pop to the subject - but the fly probably wouldn't have stuck around. So swings and roundabouts

Overall - it works nicely enough, and it been a pleasure to view

All the best
Matthew

I think you have done a good job of minimizing the clutter that naturally occurs in this type of shot. The composition looks good and I like the warm colors and the background.
