This is one of the more bizarre creatures on a river bottom.   It is called an ephoron and it makes its nymphal life burrowing in silt and debris with its tusklike mandibles.   When it is found in rivers, it is often found in huge numbers.

There are some other strange characteristics to this mayfly in its adult stages.     It is very light sensitive and if you turn on a light during an emergence you may get swarmed by this harmless insect.    Most mayflies survive a couple of days in their adult form.   This one only lasts an hour or two.   As it emerges from the river and takes flight, it immediately sheds is skin and becomes an imago mid flight.   It mates and dies very quickly.

Thank you for looking!

Fascinating image of a curious creature - hard to imagine it as a mayfly.
