Paddle-tailed Darner Yoga

Its always fun to shoot this species in flight. They tend to hoover the most out all our regular Darner species. This pose was an added bonus. Not sure if this is a courting behaviour or something related to their mating habits?

Prior to mating, male dragonflies and damselflies must transfer sperm from their gonads at the tip of the abdomen to a receptacle on the ventral side of the second abdominal segment; he will then grab a female behind her head with his terminal appendages to attempt mating (the tandem posture).  At some point, she will bend her abdomen forward, while being held by the male behind her head, to extract sperm from his second abdominal segment (the wheel position).  You can tell this is a male by the bulge under abdominal segment two.  He is probably in the process of transferring sperm in preparation for hooking up with a female.
