Canon 7D, Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS USM @ f/9, ISO 160, 1/30, Tripod. 2012/06/29, Apollo trail, Valwig, Mosel valley, Germany.
Female Firey Clearwing on caterpillar food plant while laying eggs (by simply dropping them onto the soil next to the plant).
As presented this image is heavily edited, it's the full frame but the background was unfortunately unpresentable due to the needed angle towads the insect leading to direct views onto the dark rocky soil beneath the plant which of course turned out to be black. I want your opinion if I have overdone the editing by substituting that part of the background...

Hi

I think the editing is all down to personal taste and perhaps competency. Personally I tend not to add or remove stuff other than dust spots, but then I would play with colour balance and not rely upon the camera auto settings, and I would tend to garden probably heavily before taken the shot. Perhaps most importantly is that you have disclosed any changes

Either way I think you have a fine shot of what is definitely a top moth !!!

All the best
Matthew

A beauty. I am not too bothered by the bg tweak.

Can't fault you as long as you are honest in saying what you did - its the ones that change major parts of an image and claim its all natural that make me see red! A fine image!
