Earlier this month I took off into the mountains for my first solo backpacking trip of the winter season. My goal was to capture this lake right after the first snow, before the freeze. These sorts of conditions don't generally last long or even happen every year so my expectations were low. The snow began falling heavily as I hiked in. I arrived just before dark and to my delight, when I woke up in the morning, the landscape (including my poor little tent) was coated in over 30cm of fresh snow. Thick clouds parted as the sun rose and ice fog lingered above the lake, shimmering in the morning light. I felt so lucky to have this whole backcountry paradise to myself on such a beautiful day!

That is a successful backpack trip. Nice shot and great that you went for it.

Wonderful shot! Goal beautifully achieved! The still open lake contributes greatly to this wonderful wintry scene.

I love the atmospheric nature of this. You can just feel the cold air and the sun desperately trying to warm it. Great image.

Gorgeous image Jess....The efforts were your dues to be paid, but certainly the results were the payoff...

Great Jess, shooting into the sun was risky but still paid off.
