This is an ice formation caused by a sudden drop in river levels.    I watch usgs web sites as they show river levels dropping (these are available for many rivers in the U.S.).  If it is very cold and the level has dropped, I know the river will be very beautiful.    I did blend three exposures in this image.      There is a flight of goldeneyes flying over the trees that I was tempted to remove but decided to keep.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Kevin, you've achieved a very nice and edgy composition here. The ice pizza really is the star of the show, but the subtle light on the pines at the bank of the river is also very beautiful to look at. I also like the hint of the sun coming through the trees ... it's quintessentially 'winter". I do wish the sky wasn't quite as blown out in the mid-left.
